ACTUELLE HISTORY!

Although the 2012 FIMAV is our 28th Festival, the organization that produces it, Productions Plateforme inc., is celebrating its 30th anniversary! Imagine a crowd of one hundred or so packed in a small bar, downtown Victoriaville, in the early ‘80s, to watch, enthralled, as SKELETON CREW (Fred Frith and Tom Cora) performed. It was quite the cultural shock! And it was the spark that triggered this whole adventure, risky yet so enriching, in which a handful of newcomers decided to help expose and define a new form of musical expression: Musique Actuelle.

The more time flies, the more we feel that we have a role – ever so humbly – in drawing attention to all these creative energies that are trying to make us progress as a society through the musical actions of all these musicians who passionately experiment and stand up, supported by their own conviction, uncompromising in front of adversity.

This inexhaustible source of energy is what drives us to keep doing what we do, in the hope that we can help create a better world. Why not? Plus, we have the great honour of welcoming Mr. MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS, the father figure of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music, the AACM, which he co-founded in 1965! It feels as though his aura will be protecting the 28th FIMAV, just as his presence will stimulate us to surpass ourselves.

Oh, I almost forgot: 2012 also marks the record label Les Disques VICTO’s 25th anniversary. The label will be releasing its first-ever double CD set, consisting of Peter Brötzmann’s two concerts (a solo and a trio) at last year’s FIMAV.

I think this is going to be a good edition. So please come in, discover, and enter zones of oh-so-stimulating turbulences.
