« CONCUSSSSION », by Bay Area composer and performer of electronics, AMMA ATERIA, is an on-going study that was provoked by an impact to her orbital and frontal bone. Sonic movements have influenced an unfolding process of change and development over the course of her recovery, since June 2021. She uses low-frequency binaural beats, brainwave entrainment, equal-loudness contour, and time shifts as the piece’s focal points and sound palette. The work comprises sound compositions, recordings, visual scores, performances, and time-based generated projections, as documents that track the changing neurological responses to delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma waves. “SSSS” symbolises periods of auditory disorientation that she would experience, such as instances of prolonged frequency extension of sibilance in human speech. The compositions are reflections of such experiences of stillness, unconsciousness, and auditory hallucinations, and transfigurations of them toward levitation, transformation, and neurogenesis.
