San Francisco-based guitarist and composer BILL ORCUTT released the exceptional Music for Four Guitars (Palilalia Records) in 2022, a synthesis of his main areas of musical inquiry that results in works of minimalistic repetition and permutation executed with the maximalist impact of visceral guitar tone. The compositions are rigorous and richly conceived, and ORCUTT himself plays all four parts on the recording. However, in a live context, the pieces are animated dynamically by three other outstanding and complementary guitar stylists: WENDY EISENBERG, AVA MENDOZA, and SHANE PARISH. Their musical personalities shine through as they expand the quartet’s musical palette through their distinctive improvising vocabularies, all performed at volume and with a staggering intensity. “A rigidly structured quartet that weaves tiny rhythmic phrases into expansive tapestries, drawing on the tenets of early minimalism and New York guitar groups like Glenn Branca Ensemble” (Pitchfork).
