Roscoe Mitchell : saxophone basse
Helping FIMAV to celebrate this illustrious 40th edition, the legendary ROSCOE MITCHELL returns to gift us with a solo concert. Best known for vital contributions to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, MITCHELL’s best work for decades has been under his own name. This vast body of work includes rigorously compositional orchestral projects (including an important collaboration with the Montreal-Toronto Art Orchestra, Ride the Wind, on Nessa Records, 2017), his mid-sized Note Factory ensembles, and small-group improvisation. However, the special nature of his musical research is perhaps most abundantly apparent in his solo saxophone music, where (sometimes improbable) source material undergoes alchemical permutation with keening intensity and a profoundly experimental daring, all pointing toward the magical. In recent years, MITCHELL has also dedicated himself more thoroughly to painting and visual art, including a successful exhibition at Chicago’s Corbett vs. Dempsey Gallery, further proof of his unflaggingly original creativity.
