Sun Ra would have turned 100 years old on May 24, 2014. We will celebrate this anniversary with THE RATCHET ORCHESTRA and a special program composed and inspired by this interstellar musician, plus a special guest: the Arkestra’s cosmonaut-in-chief!
The RATCHET has travelled a long way since its beginnings as a Sun Ra’s Arkestra tribute band, as testified by their commanding performance at FIMAV in 2011 and the release of a sure-footed second album, Hemlock. This time around, doublebassist / leader NICOLAS CALOIA will be presenting two long-form pieces: a new composition of his own, a FIMAV’s commission, in homage to the master, and his own arrangement of Sun Ra’s “Sunology: A Suite of Philosophical Sounds” (1956), never performed live in its entirety – a rarity of cosmic proportions!
The 19-piece ensemble will be joined by a very special guest: saxophonist MARSHALL ALLEN, almost 90, has spent 35 years playing alongside Sun Ra and another 20 leading the Arkestra after he passed away. Expect a celestial event.
